I wonder how many people could guess where I took this picture with my early edition iPhone. The mottled country road, curving to the left, seeming to lead nowhere, intrigued me, as did the companionship of the slanting landscape and the clouds spilling over the ridge. The scene, the western reaches of the Haleakalā volcano, feels as lonely as a Martian landscape and seemed worth stopping to contemplate while driving on the south coast road in Maui quite a few years ago.
